Sony CFS-99

The Sony CFS-99 is one of the very few big one piece boomboxes Sony produced. The company was more well known for it's FH multi-piece portables in boombox circles, but the effort and design put into the CFS-99 makes you wish they created more big onepiecers.

The angled top section along with other stylistic flourishes show off some classic 80s design, the inclusion of the blue and orange accents further add to the beauty of this powerhouse. The box is loaded with features that are oriented towards using external microphones, with echo controls and panning sliders for each mic input. It's got a standard 2 band tuner, this being the Japanese domestic model has the truncated FM scale, and a fully featured cassette deck. The gorgeous VU needle meters and digital LED track skip display add to the quality aesthetics and the well designed soft touch controls on the tape deck finish this radio off very cleanly.

The sound is also of a high quality, with clean highs and rounded full bass that is no doubt helped by the massive depth of the case. The tweeter positions also make for some good stereo separation.

Sony's forays into this part of the portable stereo market aren't as numerous as almost any other electronics company of the time, but one more the old adage of quality over quantity makes the CFS-99 a rarity in the boombox landscape.
